Mining
Robinson custom-engineers solutions to the mining and refining industry, including coal, copper, gold, nickel, and other mining applications that meet heavy debris, ventilation, and high-temperature requirements. Robinson’s industry-leading technical team is able to custom-engineer solutions to meet the specific demands of any environment. Core to Robinson’s expertise is designing solutions that minimize downtime and maximize the efficiency of air-moving equipment.
Applications
Mine Ventilation
- Purpose: Draft air through and out of the mine to prevent the build up of hazardous gasses and exhaust gasses
- Types of Fans Used:
- Ventilation Fans: Large centrifugal fans that supply fresh air and exhaust contaminated air.
Dust Control & Air Filtration
- Purpose: Minimize airborne dust from drilling, crushing, and material handling.
- Types of Fans Used:
- Dust Collection Fans: Integrated into baghouses and cyclone separators.
- Exhaust Fans: Help remove dust and airborne contaminants from tunnels and processing areas.
Material Handling & Pneumatic Conveying
- Purpose: Assist in transporting bulk materials (e.g., coal, ore, and minerals) through pneumatic conveying systems.
- Types of Fans Used:
- Centrifugal Fans: Properly designed for highly erosive and/or corrosive gas streams.

Backward Inclined Fans

Types Of Fans
Used In Mining
Mining ventilation is where the Robinson history began, in the late 1800s J.R. Robinson developed fans, steam boilers, engines, hoists, crushers, and haulers for coal mines and mills. A testament to J.R.’s expertise in the field of mine ventilation, the Practical Mine Ventilation college textbook was published in the 1920s. To this day, Robinson fans continue to play a significant role in the mining industry both in underground ventilation as well as surface mining applications including: crushing, grinding, and ore processing/drying.
Centrifugal Fans
- Forced draft and Induced draft fans used in dust collection, gas exhaust, and material handling, and other mining applications.
High-Temperature Resistance
- Mining process fans may handle high temperature gas streams.
- Materials should be selected to ensure the materials properties are suitable for operating temperature.
Airflow and Pressure Requirements
- Fans must provide sufficient airflow to properly ventilate mines and remove contaminants.
- Centrifugal fans are used for deep mines to maintain draft and air velocity to carry moisture up through the exhaust shaft.
Durability & Material Selection
- Fans must withstand abrasive dust, moisture, and hazardous gases (e.g., methane, sulfur dioxide).
- Corrosion-resistant materials like stainless steel improve fan lifespan.
- For highly corrosive applications, fiberglass-reinforced plastic (FRP) or special alloys may be required.
Explosion & Fire Safety
- Mines with combustible gases (methane, coal dust, hydrogen sulfide) require explosion-proof fans that comply with ATEX and MSHA (Mine Safety and Health Administration) standards.
- Non-sparking materials like aluminum and other “low-iron” materials prevent ignition risks.
Dust & Particulate Handling
- Mining processes generate large amounts of dust that can wear out fan components.
- Abrasion-resistant materials help maintain performance in high wear applications.
- Integration with dust collection systems (e.g., baghouses or cyclones) prevents fan damage.

Energy Efficiency
- Mining operations require powerful fans that consume significant energy.
- Premium-efficiency motors and Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) reduce energy costs. Sometimes “regenerative drives” are used in high horsepower, high rotor inertia applications.
- Optimized blade and impeller designs improve aerodynamics, lowering power consumption.
Noise & Vibration Control
- Large industrial fans can generate high noise levels, affecting worker health.
- Sound insulation and silencers can be added to systems to reduce noise pollution.
Maintenance and Reliability
- Fans should have easily accessible components for quick servicing.
- Auxilliary equipment like circulating oil systems reduce maintenance frequency..
- Fans should be built for continuous operation and reliability to prevent unexpected shutdowns.
Regulatory Compliance
- MSHA (Mine Safety and Health Administration)
- MSHA (Mine Safety and Health Administration)
- OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration)
- ATEX (for explosive atmospheres)
- EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) for emissions control
